Male Enhancement Clinic Q&A

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED), formerly called impotence, is defined as the inability to attain and maintain an erection of the penis to permit satisfactory sexual intercourse. It is positively correlated with age, hypertension, pre-existing heart disease and diabetes. In fact, ED can be the first warning sign for serious heart conditions. It is more common in the elderly, but as many as 1/3rd of all men above the age of 40 have some form of erectile dysfunction.

Why Do I Suffer From Erectile Dysfunction?

Male patients who visit Dr. Khilfeh for erectile dysfunction (ED) show a variety of reasons why they have this condition. Achieving an erection is a finely orchestrated event starting in the brain using multiple signals through nerves, blood vessels, and muscles to get the final result. An insult or injury anywhere along the pathway can result in dysfunction. Atherosclerosis or cholesterol build up in the arteries is a leading cause of ED in the adult population. In younger men, hormones, psychological stressors or a history of pelvic trauma usually account for the majority of cases. Other potential causes can include:

  • Alcohol and drug use
  • Relationship issues
  • Injuries
  • Stress
  • Anxiety
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Damage from cancer or surgery

How is Erectile Dysfunction Diagnosed?

Diagnosis of erectile dysfunction is usually achieved by speaking to the patient and getting an accurate and thorough history and performing a focused physical exam. Patients with other risk factors including hypertension, high cholesterol, known heart disease and diabetes are at greatest risk. A hormone screen is sometimes also done especially if an anomaly is discovered during the physical exam. Invasive testing is usually not indicated.

How is Erectile Dysfunction Treated?

Dr. Khilfeh will tailor treatment specifically to the needs of each individual patient. While medication is available to help men get and maintain erections, Dr. Khilfeh will also treat the root cause of the dysfunction. He will also provide counselling on making lifestyle improvements and healthier choices to reduce the health factors that can have a detrimental effect on erectile function.
