Physicals Q&A

What does a physical exam include?

A physical exam begins with the collection of a medical history and checking a patient’s vital signs. The doctor checks the patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, respiration rate, and temperature. The doctor listens to the heart and lungs to determine whether there are any irregularities that could indicate heart disease or respiratory problems. Most physicians also check the head and neck including throat, tonsils, ears, nose, eyes, and lymph nodes at this time. A patient’s reflexes are also tested to ensure correct nerve response. Annual exams are also an opportunity for the patient to ask questions about his or her health or any physical, emotional, or mental changes experienced since the last visit.

What types of screenings are required for adults?

Depending on the age of the patient different screenings will be used to ensure that all aspects of the body are properly functioning. Additional tests utilized for adults include:

  • Blood pressure and body mass index assessed yearly
  • Annual skin cancer exams
  • Colorectal cancer screenings performed every 10 years

Men and women also have gender specific tests including:

  • Annual testicular exams
  • Prostate cancer screenings
  • Yearly breast exams
  • Pap smear performed every three years
  • HPV tests should be conducted every five years
  • Mammograms every two years

Why are annual exams important?

Annual exams are an essential component of effective preventative health care. These physical examinations allow the doctor to identify new signs and symptoms of potentially dangerous illnesses in their earliest and most treatable stages. It is too easy to delay checkups when you are feeling well. If you haven’t had a physical in the last 12 months, make an appointment at Southwest Urgent Care today.
